About
Abule means village.
An online school for homeschooled students ages 14–18, built on a simple idea: community without conformity. Based in Washington, DC. Open to students everywhere.
The name and the mark
01
Abule takes its name from the Yoruba word for village, inspired by the belief that it takes a village to educate a young mind. Our brandmark draws inspiration from Aṣọ Òkè, a traditional Yoruba woven textile, with individual threads coming together to form a shared fabric. The contrasting thread represents individuality within community, while the italicized u in our logo represents you, standing apart without standing alone. Together, they reflect our philosophy: community without conformity, unity without uniformity.

Community without conformity. Unity without uniformity.
Think and do
02

“Before going back to college, I knew I didn’t want to be an intellectual, spending my life in books and libraries without knowing what the hell is going on in the streets. Theory without practice is just as incomplete as practice without theory. The two have to go together.”
Assata Shakur, Assata: An AutobiographyWe want students who think and do. Ideas are tested against the world they describe, which is why every student completes 20 documented hours of community service each year alongside an annual Independent Learning Project. Study informs the work, and the work sharpens the study.
Why we exist
03
We’re building a place for critical thinkers, young organizers, artists, writers, innovators and anyone who has ever looked at the world and wondered why things are the way they are, or imagined how they could be different.
Independent in thought. Collective in purpose. A student here might challenge an accepted idea, document an overlooked history, create a new solution or question an institution others take for granted.
We don’t believe students should have to wait until adulthood to have something meaningful to contribute.
