Flipped Classroom Methodology

Innovative Learning Approach

We employ a flipped classroom methodology that optimizes both independent learning and instructor-guided sessions. This research-backed approach transforms the traditional educational sequence to maximize student engagement and comprehension.

In our flipped classroom model, students are first introduced to new topics and concepts through carefully curated online materials designed for independent study. This allows students to absorb foundational knowledge at their own pace before attending live sessions.

Our live classroom sessions then build upon this independent learning by providing targeted reinforcement, clarification of complex concepts, guided practice, and personalized feedback. This structure allows instructors to focus valuable synchronous time on higher-order thinking, application of knowledge, and addressing specific student questions rather than initial content delivery.

Benefits of Our Approach

This flipped model creates a more efficient learning cycle where students come to live sessions already familiar with core concepts, enabling deeper exploration, more meaningful discussions, and personalized support. The approach accommodates diverse learning styles and needs while fostering greater student ownership of the learning process.

Live Interactive Lectures

Real-Time Learning

Weekly live lectures occur 1-3 times per week depending on the course. These 45-60 minute sessions provide valuable opportunities for students to engage directly with educators and peers in real-time.

During these interactive sessions, students can ask questions, participate in discussions, and collaborate on concepts as they’re being taught. This synchronous learning approach helps build a sense of community while ensuring students understand complex material through immediate feedback.

Participation Note

In the sample lecture video below from our Africana Studies course, student participants have been cropped out to protect their privacy. In actual classes, students can see and interact with each other in a secure, moderated environment.

Immersive Learning Experiences

Beyond Traditional Learning
Interactive Projects

Our courses extend learning beyond standard lectures through innovative, immersive projects that transform abstract concepts into tangible experiences. These collaborative activities engage multiple learning modalities and foster deeper understanding through experiential education.

From digital escape rooms to simulations, role-playing exercises to collaborative research projects, these experiences make complex historical and cultural concepts accessible and memorable.

Featured Project from Africana Studies

The Underground Railroad Escape Activity shown below is an example of our experiential learning approach from the Africana Studies course. In this activity, students and their teacher collaborate to solve historically accurate clues that guide them along the dangerous journey from enslavement to freedom in Canada, developing both historical knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Critical Thinking & Discussion

Intellectual Development

Developing analytical abilities and articulate expression are central to our educational approach. Through carefully crafted discussion questions, students engage in substantive conversations that challenge assumptions, examine diverse perspectives, and connect historical contexts to contemporary issues.

These discussions occur both synchronously during live sessions and asynchronously through our secure digital forums, allowing students to develop thoughtful responses and engage in extended dialogue with peers and educators.

Àbulę logo
Ah-boo-leh
(noun, Yorùbá)
A village or community where people learn, grow, and support one another through shared knowledge and cultural exchange. In traditional Yorùbá society, the concept embodies the collective spirit of learning and mentorship within a communal setting. Àbulę represents a digital evolution of this wisdom, creating spaces where students and educators can connect, collaborate, and thrive together in their educational journey.
Etymology: From Yorùbá, echoing the traditional African philosophy of ubuntu—"I am because we are."
